A REAL EXPEDITION!
The Sea Ice & Islands Expedition (c) is Unique to Lapland Ranch! We aim to cover up to 500km by dogsled on the frozen Sea Ice shelf and explore the Lapland Archipeligo Islands between Sweden and Finland. It will be beautiful and extreme conditions similar to the Polar environments. It is designed for those wanting to enjoy an Arctic type Expedition and those hoping to train towards going to the North or South Pole in the future. Each team member will have the opportunity to practice varying Polar navigation techniques, to lead the group and develop a variety of Arctic Wilderness Skills and Experience.
After a full day of training at our kennel, where you will learn the basic skills required to drive your own dogsled team, care for the dogs in camp and on the trail, challenge your fitness, test out your gear and make sure you are ready to go into the wilderness, you will embark on the expedition. Traveling with 6-8 dogs each, you will drive a team of our super friendly huskies, many of whom are our Race Team Athletes. You’ll aim to drive the dogsled 60-80km each day, across the frozen Sea Ice shelf and Lapland Archipeligo Islands. Taking in the spectacular Lapland scenery and Extended Polar Night Twilight. This Expedition is an excellent opportunity to see Aurora Borealis and if the Northern Lights are predicted, night dogsledding will be organised. Evenings will be spent caring for the dogs, setting up camp and enjoying a warm expedition meal with good company, sharing your stories of an exciting day sledding through the snow.
Other Winter and Polar Activities can be organised during the Expedition for those wishing to extend their Experience. These will last approximately 1 hour and include: Ice Fishing, Cross Country Skiing, Snowshoing, Igloo building.
The Sea Ice & Islands Expedition (c) is designed for Adventurers looking for an Extreme Trip, where they can participate as team members. To be selected, you will need to bring some skills and experience to the team. You do not need to have sleddog experience, as the team leader will teach you what you need to know before setting off and will help you along the way. You are expected to being some other beneficial skills and experience, to love and respect working dogs, have a reasonable level of endurance fitness and most importantly have the motivation and character to help the team and every member achieve the goals. Some skills past team members have brought are: Mountain expeditions, endurance or winter sports experience, wild camping, snow and ice skills, wilderness cooking, fire lighting, first aid, navigation, rope skills, photography and journalism. If you have any of these skills and are keen to join a challenging winter Expedition with fit, well trained sleddogs, we encourage you to apply.
Previous team members have gone on to join Antarctic Expeditions, climb some of the World’s highest peaks, join the Marines, become Expedition Guides, start their own Adventure company, get a job with National Geographic, a place at Vet School and become a professional adventure athlete.
PURPOSE & PREPARATION
The main purpose of each expedition is to have fun, enjoy the dogs and environment and make friends! There will be an element of research and investigation on each Exped, in particular that of your own human endurance and recording 'on-the-ground' weather and snow conditions. Every expedition will involve filming and photography coverage for media publication. We will look out for large animals and their tracks and the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). Training will be intensive before departure, to maximise the time available to be on expedition. Each member should arrive in good health for an Arctic Expeditions, this means good mental robustness, a reasonable level of endurance fitness, willingness to work hard as part of the team, care for the dogs as your first priority, travel long distances by dogsled each day, camp overnight in arctic weather and wilderness conditions, carry all equipment required in the sled (some caches will be placed if possible or required).
After the Expedition is finished, we will enjoy a night of celebration with a traditional Lapland meal together, where we can share our wonderful and challenging experiences.

WHY CHOOSE US?
The Sea Ice & Islands Expedition (c) is the intellectual property and copyright of Mel Andrews in cooperation with Lapland Ranch.
This is a Unique Expedition. No other company of private individual has operated a multi day dogsledding expedition on the Lapland Archipelago Sea or its Islands. You will be joining a pioneering team, with experienced leadership.
We are native English speaking.
The co-owner of Lapland Ranch; Mel Andrews, was the first person to travel by dogsled across the frozen sea ice of the Lapland Archipelago and its islands, dogsledding 500km alone with her huskies across this vast open wilderness, proving that it is possible.
No hidden costs. Everything that is included is included. We don't charge extra for coffee, bed linen etc like many Tourist companies in Lapland do!
We are a fully insured and registered company, registered for VAT and licensed by the Swedish Authorities to have a kennel. Our Kennel meets all the Swedish regulations of correct size, space and safety standards.
We love our dogs and know everything about them! They are respected athletes and part of our family. We do not follow or condone the practice of destroying healthy dogs at the end of each season. We have come under fire for standing up against this barbaric and outdated way of treating dogs, but we believe that dogs should be loved and respected. Our retired dogs live out their old age days with us at Lapland Ranch.
Mel Andrews is a public figure and professional dogsled guide with vast experience, credentials and results. In addition to racing sleddogs at world class level, she been designing, planning, guiding, leading and coordinating Expeditions in Scandinavia, Lapland and the Arctic for 10 years.
Nigel Garner co-owner of Lapland Ranch is a qualified Geography and Environment Teacher, Skiing and Sports Instructor. He has led and guided over 100 Expeditions in some of the highest mountain ranges in the Alps and Norway and in across extreme Arctic terrain in the depths of winter for over 30 years.
We train and work with exceptional people and dogs. Only the best Guides that have proven themselves to us a Tour Guides are then trained and make it to become an Expedition Guide at Lapland Ranch.
